A typical artificial lift strategy for an unconventional reservoir is to initially run ESPs to produce 5000 bfpd to 500 bfpd, then convert to rod lift. Many times, this takes 3-5 ESP interventions for a producer to get to the “rod lift rate ranges”. With the use of mechanical long stroke units having stroke lengths of 306 – 416 inches, converting to rod lift is being done sooner. Rates of 700-900 bfpd are being achieved in wells as deep as 10000 0 feet. This helps to eliminate running multiple ESPs to draw down a well into the 400-500 bfpd range.
